What is Eco-Reinforcement?
Eco-Reinforcement is a third-party certification scheme which assesses and recognises responsibly sourced reinforcing steel products. It has been developed as a sector-specific standard which complies with the requirements of BRE's BES 6001 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.
The Eco-Reinforcement Standard was developed by a consortium of reinforcing steel producers and fabricators, in collaboration with BRE Global and a wide range of external stakeholders, to identify the priority areas of the sector and work towards consistent performance measurement and improvement. Participating mills, fabricators and external stakeholders now form the Scheme Council of Eco-Reinforcement Ltd, a company established to develop, manage and progress the Eco-Reinforcement standard and certification scheme.
- The certified supply chain
The Eco-Reinforcement scheme provides assesses sustainable impacts throughout the reinforcing steel supply chain i.e. from raw material through to construction site. The certifiable organisations within the supply chain are the steel mill and fabricator. Each receives a rating, and each has responsibilities within the supply chain:
In order for Eco-Reinforcement to be specified, both the steel mill and fabricator in the supply chain must be certified, with the rating of the Eco-Reinforcement steel supplied being the lower of the specific mill/fabricator rating within that supply chain. Hence, mill and fabricator certificates are only valid when read in conjunction with one another.
- Who can be assessed against the scheme?
Any steel reinforcement producer or fabricator with the aim of measuring performance and committing to improve their responsible sourcing credentials can be assessed against the scheme - application details are available on the standard documents page. Currently, BRE Global are the only certification body offering assessment against the standard but it is hoped that other certification bodies will come on board in future.
